With a world of culture and hidden pockets yet to even be touched, local guides and their knowledge are essential for any movement within Mali. The last decade in Mali has been tumultuous with terror and strife, but there are undoubtedly aspects of Mali that are not possible to experience elsewhere on the plant, when they are open. Timbuktu, Djenne, and Dogon Country invite a level of intrigue that has been concealed for centuries. Perhaps it’s the largest mud building in the world in Djenne that is recognized by UNESCO and impeccably restored year after year that warrants the lure. Or maybe it’s the fact that Timbuktu is an actual place and the realization of the historical significance that a dusty village in what seems like the farthest place on earth plays in our everyday life. Dogon country also brings a commendable degree of awe when witnessing entire villages built on the edge of cliffs.

Understandably due to time restraints or for safety reasons in some cases the capital city, Bamako may be your only stop in one of West Africa’s most mysterious places. It should be noted however that Bamako has played and continues to play a vital role in the music scene that has become synonymous with Mali. If you are here, give yourself the time and space to immerse yourself in the entire culture that surrounds Malian music and artists. Spend some time trying to play the djembe or kora, or dance the night away with masters in Bamako. We can almost guarantee your “Top 40” will never be the same.
